Welcome to the module on web tools and resources for learning
Begin Reading with contrasting ideas about the Web in the K-12 classroom:
Cuban, L. (2000). An excerpt of his book, Computers Oversold and Underutilized, is summarized at http://www.hup.harvard.edu/catalog.php?isbn=9780674011090. Here is a summary of an online interview with Cuban. Book is online as pdf HERE.
vs.
John Seely Brown (2000) Growing up digital (pdf) And his argument for video game play in education.
Who is right? We’ll see. But we do know that the majority of digital media are now accessed via mobile, not desktop, devices. (see Pew Internet stats, 2019)
Here’s another perspective on the web to consider… the challenge to all teachers to teach “new literacies” as they teach their content (see Miners & Pascopella online). Are all teachers considering helping their students learn these new reading and writing literacies?
CEA celebrated a recent (2022) ban on hybrid/dual instruction, but Connecticut school administrators CAPSS warns that may throw out the baby with the bathwater. There is much to learned and researched about how remote and hybrid/dual learning may be effectively used in post-COVID learning environments.
How about this fact: Smart phone usage continues to grow. It is no arbitrary decision that the statistical point of comparison was between new lives and mobiles; the next generation of students will inevitably be armed with smarter mobiles at younger ages. Consider this list of Common Sense Media’s choice of apps for pre-schoolers starting at age 2. I’ve certainly heard it stated that technology affects brain development. This is typically an argument to limit early childhood access to technology. But I have not seen evidence to support such a claim. Here is a relatively balanced short piece on the topic (2020).
And things will keep changing. See if you agree with these findings about student use of technology from a 2016 survey (pdf infographic).
