John Seely Brown (2000). Growing up digital. Change Magazine (March/April), 10-20.And his argument for video games in education.
Who is right? We’ll see. But we do know that the majority of digital media are now accessed via mobile, not desktop, devices. (see Pew Internet stats, 2015)
Here’s another perspective on the web to consider… the challenge to all teachers to teach “new literacies” as they teach their content (see Miners & Pascopella online). Are all teachers considering helping their students learn these new reading and writing literacies?
How about this fact: In 2014 for every baby born there were 5 smart phones activated. It is no arbitrary decision that the statistical point of comparison was between new lives and mobiles; the next generation of students will inevitably be armed with smarter mobiles at younger ages. Consider this list of Common Sense Media’s choice of apps for pre-schoolers starting at age 2. I’ve certainly heard it stated that technology affects brain development. This is typically an argument to limit early childhood access to technology. But I have not seen evidence to support such a claim. Here is a relatively balanced short piece on the topic from Learner Log (2018).
